FAQs

  1. How many seats are there?
We can comfortably seat around 400 people. We have approximately 250 deck chairs, and an additional 150 seats. Our lawn at the front is preferred by some, so bring your bean bags or a picnic rug! Oh and don’t forget your cushions! They make the deck chairs most comfortable.
  2. Do we have to bring chairs?
We provide the chairs. Plus we do have a limited selection of pillows so we recommend people bring their own to get the most comfort.
  3. How do I buy tickets?
Tickets can be pre-purchased online, or come to the Box Office any night from 6.30pm to purchase tickets (when gates open). Sorry, due to our limited day time staffing, we are not able to process phone or in-person bookings.
  4. What about mosquitoes/midgies?
We do get some biting insects, so for your comfort we provide a luscious Viva La Body repellent on the bar, or you may prefer to bring their own.
  5. How do I get there?
Come on foot down the well-lit Damoe Ra walkway steps from the Esplanade near Parliament House, or walk to us from the Darwin Waterfront Precinct.
There is also free parking in front of the Cinema, or on busy nights from the Esplanade. Plus we have bike racks if you come on your bicycle.
  6. Can I pay by card?
At our kiosk and box office, we take cash, and major cards for purchases over $10.00 . Our nightly food vendors are cash only.
  7. Where is the nearest ATM?
At the Waterfront, or up the Damoe Ra walkway steps to the Smith St Mall in town.
  8. What is the food like?
We serve hot food seven nights a week from when our gates open until the start of first screening. If you would like to dine on our delicious dinners then we suggest you arrive i.e. before 7pm to avoid disappointment as the caterers can sell out. For more information on the caterers visit this Menu page.
  9. What other stuff can I buy from Deckchair Cinema?
Take your own part of the Deckchair Cinema home with our very own stubby holders, caps, stickers and t-shirts and our very own book Flix in the Tropics, all sold at the kiosk!
  10. What’s it like there??
We are on the edge of Darwin Harbour where we enjoy glorious Top End sunsets over the water. The grounds are edged by trees and this little patch of remnant forest provides wildlife with a little piece of heaven! So we have possums, barking owls and more, that frequently visit after dark. Watch your food!
  11. Who runs the Deckchair Cinema?
We are a community-run venue operated by the Darwin Film Society and its 700 odd members. All profits return to the cinema, and other projects we like to support e.g. Thursday movie fundraisers nights, and being a key prize sponsor for the Fist Full of Films Festival.
  12. What is your approach to sustainability?
The Deckchair Cinema aims to be sustainable and tries to minimise its waste. We ask all patrons to place any rubbish and recycling in the correct bins.
We do not sell any bottled water, and instead offer free filtered water for unlimited re-fills!

Wet Weather Policy

At Deckchair Cinema, we work by the motto… The show must go on! So you can rest assured we’ll be working hard behind the scenes so you can enjoy a terrific film.

We’re lucky in Darwin, as storms generally occur late afternoon and have ceased raining before the film starts at 7:30pm each night. Water is easily shaken from the nylon deckchairs and we have towels on standby if required. After an afternoon storm it is extremely pleasant to sit outside at the Deckchair and enjoy a film.We also have undercover areas where you can retreat out of the rain.

In the event of:

Light Rain:               We will continue to show the film, you can take shelter under the kiosk awning or enjoy the pleasant rain.
Heavy Rain:             We will pause or delay the film for a short period until the rain eases.
Cancellation:           If the rain is too heavy and we cancel the film, you will receive complimentary tickets to another screening.
No Show:                  If the show goes on, but you don’t attend, we will not provide a refund.

Follow our Deckchair Cinema Facebook page for updates on the evenings’ screening in the event of wet weather, which we keep up-to-date with the conditions as we are experiencing them.
